Pixel Cross Stitch

Cross stitch at the scale of a single pixel, resolving whole images in thread.

02 — The Story

Pixel Cross Stitch takes the counted cross down to the scale of a single pixel.

Whole motifs resolve out of the grid like an image drawn in thread, each tiny cross a point of colour in a larger picture. At this scale there is no room for approximation — the design is planned point by point before a single stitch is made.

It is the meeting of ancient counting and modern image.

Read as museum plates — the stitch at the scale of the hand that made it.

Plate i — Thread Direction & Density

The motif is mapped to a grid first, then built one cross at a time, each stitch standing in for a single pixel of colour.

Plate ii — Surface, Layering & Light

Seen close, the surface is unmistakably geometric; seen from a distance, the individual crosses dissolve into a single continuous image.
