10 Years of Craft, One Label — The Story Behind Indigrey

Indigrey is new. But the hands behind it are not.

Before this label existed, there were ten years — ten years of manufacturing embroidered women's clothing for other brands, domestic markets, and export houses. Ten years of producing pieces that carried someone else's name, someone else's story. We were good at it. We knew the craft deeply. And at some point, we were ready to build something of our own.

So we did.

Why We Started Indigrey

Most people who launch a clothing brand start with an idea. We started with a decade of knowledge — of what good embroidery actually looks like, of what separates a piece that truly lasts, of what the craft requires at every stage.

Indigrey is where that knowledge found its own home. A label where nothing is rushed, nothing is outsourced carelessly, and every decision — from the first sketch to the final stitch — is made by people who have spent years earning the right to make it.

The owner of Indigrey is the designer. Not a brand that hires a designer, not a label that picks styles from a trend catalogue — the person running this label is the same person drawing the first line on paper. Every collection is self-curated, born from a clear point of view. When you wear Indigrey, you are wearing someone's actual vision.

How a Piece Actually Begins

Design at Indigrey starts with a sketch and a question: does this silhouette deserve embroidery, and if so — what kind?

The pattern and the embroidery are developed in parallel, not one after the other. We think about how a woman will actually wear the piece — is it for an easy Tuesday, or for an evening that matters? That single question shapes every decision that follows. Everyday pieces are designed for movement and comfort. Occasional pieces are designed to be remembered.

Once the silhouette feels right, we turn to the motifs. Each motif is carefully created to match the character of the piece — its weight, its drape, its mood. A fluid silhouette needs a motif that moves with it. A structured shirt needs something more precise. We spend real time here, and it shows.

Then comes the stitch. The embroidery techniques we use — Sketchfill Cord, Fly Brick, Knotwork, Filigree Traceline, Pixel Cross Stitch, Corded Stem Fill, and others — are not chosen at random. Each stitch has a texture, a density, a way of catching light. The stitch used inside a motif changes how the entire piece looks and feels on the body, and we treat that decision with the seriousness it deserves.

Thread Colour: The Detail That Changes Everything

Thread colour sounds simple. It is anything but.

The difference between embroidery that looks handcrafted and beautiful, and embroidery that feels busy or unresolved, often comes down entirely to how the thread colours are chosen — how they relate to the base fabric, how they interact with each other, whether the contrast is sharp or soft, whether the tones are harmonious or quietly competing.

This is where we have invested the most time, and where we feel most confident. Every colour combination in every piece at Indigrey goes through multiple rounds of testing. We sample it. We look at it in different lights. We change it. We try again. Several tests and trials before anything is finalised — because we have a clear sense of what we are aiming for.

The Fabric: Sourced Directly

We source fabric directly from established looms in Erode, Tamil Nadu and Bhiwandi, Maharashtra — two of India's most significant textile regions. By going directly to the source, we control the quality of the weave from the very beginning, before a single thread of embroidery is placed.

We use 100% pure viscose — a fabric chosen for its natural softness, its beautiful drape, and the way it carries colour. We run our own dyeing process in-house, using non-harmful, skin-safe chemicals. The result is a fabric that holds colour deeply, falls beautifully, and feels genuinely gentle against the skin.

The embroidery thread is also 100% pure viscose. Viscose thread carries a natural sheen that gives each motif depth and warmth, and it behaves consistently across every stitch. The thread used for construction stitching is equally well chosen — because we do not cut corners on what you cannot see.

Stitched by Professionals, Held to One Standard

Every piece at Indigrey is stitched by skilled, experienced professionals. Embroidery of this detail requires hands that truly know what they are doing.

The owner is closely involved in quality at every stage — not as a formality, but genuinely. Nothing leaves Indigrey without being held to that standard. Nothing is done unethically — not with our fabric, not with our processes, not with the people who make our pieces.

We are not trying to be everything to everyone. Indigrey works in a deliberate niche — embroidered women's clothing that sits between everyday ease and considered design. We release a limited number of designs because we believe that doing a small number of things exceptionally well is worth more than doing many things adequately.

Every design is thought through completely before it is produced. Every piece that reaches you has been sketched, questioned, revised, tested, sampled, and approved by someone who cares about it deeply.

We started this label because we believed there was a gap — clothing that carries real craft, real intention, and real softness. Not just in the fabric, but in the way it is made. Clothing where the effort is not hidden but felt.
